Why does Gizmodo Want To Kill PEEK?

SidGabriel — Sat, 11/07/2009 - 04:16

I've had my Peek email device for a few months now and I've been wondering what to write about it. I needed the right impetus.

Seeing Gizmodo go for the throat with 3 negative posts in three days (Twitterpeak is Dumb | Ridiculous things Gizmodo editors made up | Poll run after smearing) made me feel I should provide some counterpoints Gizmodo missed in their apparent bloodlust.

The Peek Battery Lasts More Than 24 Hours

I originally thought the device was kinda useless. Until the day that my iPhone, my G1 and my laptop battery died. I had actually left my Peek in the car for a couple days. I reached into the door compartment of my LandRover and pulled it out. It not only had my mail, but also about 1/3 of the battery left. I hadn't gotten anything important and didn't have to write any emails but avoided the feeling of disconnection. If it had been a twitterpeek I would have updated my status: "I can't believe PEEK's battery life. I left it in my car days ago and it's still on!"

A World Full of Connected Devices is On It's Way

We desperately need to support independent manufacturers of connected devices. The deal PEEK did with TMobile to pay for bandwidth only is a flagship deal for a new industry. I want all of my devices to eventually be connected to an Internet-of-Things but I don't want to configure wifi on all of them. I want companies like PEEK to pave the way for "bandwidth only" no-phone-number devices.

Peek is a win for youth

It's a hell of a lot easier to replace a PEEK than an iPhone and kids are rough on high tech. It's also better to pay for twitter bandwidth once instead of monthly.

Gizmodo hasn't been cool since it's founders "left".

What the hell is up with going to the throat of scrappy entrepreneurial companies that are up-ending what we think of the gadget space? This is not why Gizmodo was started, today's post looks like 100% advertising: http://gizmodo.com/5398920/gadget-deals-of-the-day-futuristic-friday-edi... . Gizmodo founder Peter Rojas would probably rather roll in s#%t than post something like that, though it's been a while since he was aboard that ship and without him, they've lost their way.
